Cuckoo rice cookers are the number one selling brand in South Korean and are known for their high-quality, consistent performance. They’re well known for their home appliances and are lauded around the world for their reliability, durability, and delicious results.
Each model is a little different but this video shows you how simple it is to use a Cuckoo rice cooker to make basic white rice:
One thing we should mention is prices between these models vary drastically. Of the products we included in our review, prices range from roughly $100 to $600. Those in the lower end of the price range generally perform just as well as more expensive options – most reviews are very happy with the results, no matter how much the product cost. But, if you want a rice cooker that serves a large group of people or lets you cook more than a dozen different things, expect to pay a little more.
When trying to figure out which Cuckoo rice cooker is best for you, here are the main things to keep in mind.
It’s important to note that all Cuckoo rice cookers work using the same basic principle. The differences lie in the materials, how many people they can feed, and their size and build. It’s a good idea to know what you’re looking for before you shop. How many people do you want to serve? How much space do you have on your countertop? Having a good idea of what you’re looking for helps you choose the best fit.
All rice cookers use pressure but there are two different types: electrical and induction.
Most electric models use what’s called Fuzzy Logic which involves a computer chip that adjusts cooking time and temperature. Electric models use a heating plate that warms the water in the cooking pan, boiling it which releases steam, builds pressure, and cooks the rice.
Induction heating is a little more precise. Rather than using a heating plate, induction cooking uses an alternating electrical current moving through metal coils below the pan which transfers to the pan itself, creating heat. This heat is distributed more evenly than heat from an electrical cooking plate. It encompasses the entire cooking pan, not just at the bottom near the heat source.
Induction is a little faster and can be more reliable but the automatic adjustments made using Fuzzy Logic are pretty good at compensating for any shortcomings that electric rice cookers may have.
If you’re planning to leave your rice cooker on the counter all the time, weight isn’t that important. That said, if you’re planning to store it in the cupboard when not in use, make sure it’s lightweight enough to lift easily.
As far as dimensions, some of these rice cookers are pretty big and may not fit under your cupboards. Larger models also take up a decent amount of counter space so make sure you have enough room before you buy.
This is one of the most important things to keep in mind when choosing a rice cooker. If you have a large family, you need a model capable of serving everyone at once, something like the Cuckoo CRP-P1009SW that serves 10. On the other hand, if it’s just you or you and your partner, something like the Cuckoo CR-0351F is much more reasonable.
It’s important to remember that Cuckoo rice cookers are made in Korea, so some of the instructions may be a little hard to figure out. That said, there are plenty of resources available online and, as you can see from the video, they’re generally pretty easy to use.
All Cuckoo rice cookers are covered with the same warranty – one-year labor and one-year parts. They’ll repair or replace a product as long as the damage occurred with normal use.
Most of these models, like the Cuckoo CRP-JHSR0609F, have an automatic steam cleaning feature and a non-stick cooking surface. All you have to do is run a cleaning cycle and wipe the inside of the cooking pot clean.
Generally, any of these rice cookers can make white rice in about 20 to 30 minutes. Cook time varies depending on what type of rice and how much you’re making and varies slightly from one machine to the next.
As we mentioned, prices vary quite a bit for these Cuckoo models. Be prepared to pay anywhere from $100 to $600, depending on the kinds of features you’re looking for and how big your budget is.
The inner cooking pots of these rice cookers are made of either stainless steel or aluminum. Stainless steel is a little stronger than aluminum but aluminum is much lighter. Another difference is that aluminum is a better conductor of heat which is why it’s more commonly used in electric pressure models.
Each of these products comes with a rice scoop and measuring cup. Not only does this help you make sure you’re adding the right amount of ingredients to the pot, but it’s also very convenient when it comes time to serve the rice.
You already know that you can make rice with your rice cooker but if you’re looking for a new way to use yours, give this apple sauce with berries recipe a try.
