Echo ShowEditor’s Choice

  • Type: dual smart speakers with a screen
  • Connection: Wi-Fi
  • Intercom capability: audio and video calls, monitoring, smart home devices control

More features: compatible with Alexa; hands-free operation and voice control; can play music and video

If you truly are in the market for the best wireless home intercom system, then this just might be your best bet. Its only true drawback is that it utilizes Wi-Fi for its connective purposes. However, this is a necessary step, since this device functions as much more than just an intercom system within your home.

Since this device connects to your home internet, it puts the internet at your fingertips, or voice rather. This unit can be connected to Alexa, making it an almost completely hands-free device. You can use it to play music or movies, communicate within your home, keep your calendar, or even call your friends on their cell phones. The Echo can also be connected with any number of apps to help make your life a bit easier. While these features don’t come cheaply, they certainly are useful.

This intercom system can be connected to Alexa, so it can also be used with any other Alexa products. You could use it as a baby monitor as well. It could also be used to turn your lights off and on or open your garage door. If you are looking for a better way to manage your household and stay connected with your family, this is a great device to check out.

Why did it make our list?

  • Compatible with Alexa
  • Voice control
  • Can be used to play music and video
  • Can be used as a phone, an intercom, or a baby monitor

What is not ideal about it?

  • Connects with Wi-Fi
  • Pricier than intercom-only systems
  • Type: wireless intercom
  • Connection: 20-channel secure connection
  • Intercom capability: voice intercom, monitoring

More features: one-to-one call and group call, voice-operated exchange

This intercom system is one of the most, if not the most, expandable on the market today. It has 20 different secure channels, making it ideal for people with large families, or for someone who has frequent guests in their home. It would be an ideal system for bed and breakfast or for someone who wants to keep close tabs on an elderly parent that is within their care.

Even though it has 20 different secure channels and can be expanded pretty much infinitely, you can still use this system for group communication. If you have a large home with lots of people under one roof, this is a great feature. It will allow you to clearly communicate with everyone quickly and easily, no matter where they are in the house.

The only drawback to this system is that each intercom doesn’t have a very big range. This could make it difficult to communicate with a small set of these intercoms in a large house. Luckily, the more devices you add to the system, the larger your range will be, as they can piggyback off of each other’s antenna and extend their range, thus allowing them to reach a greater distance.

What are our favorite features?

  • 20 different secure channels
  • One-to-one or one-to-many capabilities
  • Can be expanded infinitely
  • Portable

What could be better?

  • Short range
  • Type: wireless intercom
  • Connection: 7-channel secure connection (6250–467.6125 MHz)
  • Intercom capability: voice intercom, monitoring

More features: 1/2-mile range, one-to-one or one-to-all communication

If you don’t need a video intercom, but still want outstanding range and portability, then this might be the right setup for your needs. These monitors have one of the largest ranges on the market and are extremely portable. This makes them great to use as an audio baby monitor for when you want to keep an eye (ear) on your baby but still get work done outside of your house. This system has a range of up to ½ a mile without obstructions, making them a great choice for when you are outside.

Their portability also has lots to do with their outstanding battery life. Each device comes with a rechargeable battery that can also be run off of wall power. Since these devices also use USB ports to charge, they could also be run off of a power bank when you are on the go on the outside of your home. That way, you can still keep in close contact with anyone in your house while you get your outdoor chores finished up.

This intercom system can also be expanded so that you have as many devices as you need. While it only features seven different channels, this should be more than enough for a household. You also have the option of speaking with one unit or communicating with every unit at the same time. This would make whole family announcements quick and easy.

What do we love it for?

  • Large range
  • Portable
  • Rechargeable battery
  • Expandable

What were we disappointed with?

  • Only seven channels
  • Type: wireless intercom
  • Connection: 10-channel secure connection (5875–467.7125 MHz)
  • Intercom capability: voice intercom, monitoring

More features: 1,800-feet range, one-to-one call and group call, voice-operated exchange

If you are looking for an easy to set up, budget-friendly intercom option, then this just might be the right choice for you. This system can be expanded upon and has a pretty big range, making it a good choice for larger homes. It also features ten different secure channels, making it easy to have a private conversation with only one person in your home at a time, or with everyone at the same time.

These intercoms come with a rechargeable battery, which makes them slightly portable. While these batteries can be quickly recharged by either a power bank or a standard plug, it might not be a bad idea to keep these units plugged in all the time. The batteries on their own do not last all that long, since they were designed as more of a backup source of power rather than a primary one.

This intercom system should also probably only be used within the home, since they do not do well with large distances and obstacles. While they might work sufficiently in a smaller yard with a smaller home, you wouldn’t want to try and use them while you are far away from your house doing yard work.

Why did it make our list?

  • Easy to set up
  • Large range
  • Ten secure channels

What is not ideal about it?

  • Limited portability

7-inch Wireless Door Phone Intercom SystemBest Door Phone Intercom

  • Type: door phone
  • Connection: 4G wireless
  • Intercom capability: two-way intercom, monitoring, unlock

More features: hands-free call and talk; waterproof camera with night vision; up to 300 m transmission distance

Intercom systems don’t have to be limited to communicating with the people that are actually inside your home. You can also use them to talk to, and see, anyone that is at your front door. This intercom monitor does all of this and more. With this device installed on your front door, you actually won’t need your old doorbell either. When someone comes up to the door, they push the bell button and the interior monitor clicks on.

Once the monitor has been activated, you will hear one of the 16 different chimes to alert you that someone is at the door. This device will then allow you to see who is at the door, even in the dark, without getting up, and also talk to them. It can also be connected to a smart lock system so that you can let your visitors in without ever having to come to the door yourself.

While the range on this intercom system might not reach everywhere in a big house, its secure connection is easy to set up. It also comes with rechargeable batteries, which makes the indoor monitor nice and portable, so that you can keep it with you no matter where you go in your home.

What stands out?

  • Crystal clear video
  • Night vision
  • Large display
  • Easy to setup
  • Waterproof

What cons did we manage to find?

  • Short range

Infant Optics DXR-8 Video Baby MonitorBest Baby Monitor

  • Type: baby monitor
  • Connection: secure 2.4GHz FHSS wireless transmission
  • Intercom capability: monitoring

More features: sound-activated LEDs, night vision, scan mode, talk-back function, interchangeable lens system, room temperature sensor

While this system is designed to be used as a baby monitor, it would also make for a pretty good intercom or security system. It is motion activated, which will let you know if someone is moving through an area or if a baby has just woken up. It can also be used in pitch black, since it has a night vision camera.

It is also built to be nice and secure. Since this system does not rely on home Wi-Fi for its connectivity, it will not allow anyone to hack into it. That way, you know that the only people using it to communicate are people in your family. Also, unlike lots of other baby monitors out there, this one has a communication feature which allows you to speak through the camera. In that way, it can certainly be used as a home intercom system. Of course, since it only has one channel, you will be limited to communicating with that one room.

Unlike lots of other video intercom systems, this one can be remotely adjusted so that you can get a better view. You also have the option of switching out the camera lens on this system to get a wider view of a given area. This makes it an ideal choice for a large room. It should not be used outdoors, however, as the camera is not water and weatherproof.

Why is it special?

  • Adjustable camera
  • Interchangeable lenses
  • Long battery life
  • Large range
  • Night vision

What are the flaws?

  • Only one secure channel

Things to Consider

In this section, we will cover everything that you need to know to find the best wireless home intercom system. There are several things that you need to take into account before you make your final purchase, but first, let’s review what a wireless intercom system actually is and does.

What is a wireless home intercom system?

To put it as simply as possible, a wireless home intercom system is a series of devices that allow a group of people to communicate with each other throughout the house without having to be near each other. These systems can either connect to each other through a home Wi-Fi system or a more secure encrypted channel.

Key features to consider before buying an intercom system

Now, that you know what is the wireless intercom system, it’s time to make clear how you can use it and what to look for before buying your very best.

Types of wireless intercom system

There are two different choices that you can pick from when it comes to wireless home intercoms. The type that you choose depends solely on your personal preference and how you intend to utilize your system. You can either choose from an audio-only system or one that features video as well.

Audio – Audio systems will only allow you to talk to each other. These work great for communicating with all of your family members quickly and easily, but they would not be a good choice if you want to use your intercom as a security system.

Video – Video monitors provide you with the same functions as an audio monitor, with the bonus of being able to see who you are talking to, or who is at your front door. These make them ideal for use as a monitoring system. The only drawback is that they tend to be more expensive than audio-only models.

Power source

While these devices are wireless in how they connect to each other, they still need to be powered in some manner. All of the systems on the market operate with a plug-in option. This will help to keep them online for most of the time.

If, however, for whatever reason your home loses power, it might also be a good idea to look for a system that features a battery backup. That way, you will still be able to use it, at least for a little while even though you are without power in your home. This would be an essential feature for a security system or baby monitor.

Type of connection

When it comes to how your intercom system will connect with each other, you have two basic choices. You can either choose a system that connects with your home Wi-Fi or one that will only connect to other intercom devices. Both of these options have their own advantages and disadvantages, but the secure connections are usually the way to go.

This type of connection is super easy to set up. All you need to do is place the devices that you wish to connect within the appropriate range, click them on the same channel, and voila, you are ready to roll. Of course, the main reason that intercoms with secure connections are preferable to ones that use Wi-Fi is because of their secure nature.

The last thing that you want to have happen, especially if you are using a baby monitor, is to have someone hack into your intercom system. If that happens, they can speak through the system or, worse yet, utilize the video feature to see into your home.

Number of channels

6 Best Wireless Home Intercom Systems – Unlimited Communication Within Your Home

You can get intercom systems that only use a small number of channels or units that have up to 20 different secure channels. The idea behind these different channels is that they allow you to have a private conversation with one, or a few people, in your home without anyone being able to listen in.

The availability of multiple secure channels also helps to make the intercom system more secure. By using a different channel every once in a while, you reduce the risk of anyone being able to listen in from outside of your home.

Connection distance

Depending on the size of your home, you will want to pay close attention to the connection distance of the intercom devices. This distance will dictate how many units you will need to use your system effectively.

You also need to take the building materials used in the construction of your home into account when you are making your purchase. If you have a newer home, the distances that the manufacturer gives on the units will be pretty accurate, since modern homes have relatively thin walls. If, however, you have an older home made of brick or plaster, you might not get quite the distance you’d expect, which means you will need to buy more units.

While it might seem like a straightforward idea, not all of the wireless intercom systems can be expanded upon. Make sure that you read the labels and system details carefully before you make your final purchase. Otherwise, you won’t be able to get your intercoms to reach to every corner of your household as you would hope.

One-to-One or One-to-Many

Since this intercom is going to be used in a home setting, you want to be sure that you select one that allows you to connect between one system or multiple systems at a time. This will allow you to have private discussions or make family announcements.

Our Verdict

There are plenty of different options out there when you are looking for the best wireless home intercom system. Overall, the best device that we found has to be the Echo Show. It not only allows you to seamlessly communicate with others in your home, but it can also be connected with Alexa. This makes it ideal for playing music, watching videos, or controlling other smart devices.

Or perhaps you are simply looking for an audio intercom system. In that case, you could choose the Hosmart 1500FT 7-Channel Wireless Intercom System. It has a gigantic range, making it ideal for use in large homes. It is also incredibly portable, making it a great choice for use when you are out and about in your yard or garage. It has an outstanding battery and can be quickly recharged.

If, however, you need an intercom system for a lot of people, then you should definitely check out the Samcom 20-Channel Wireless Intercom System. These devices all you to use up to 20 different secure channels, making them ideal for large families. Even though this system can handle lots of devices, you can still talk to all of them at the same time, making them a great fix for quick family announcements.

I have an adult son who is physically handicapped. We spend our lives yelling back and forth from opposite ends of the house. We have to find another way to communicate when not in the same room and this sounds like the answer. It is just the 2 of us and we need to be able to communicate from his room and bathroom to 3 other rooms in the house. It also has to be voice-activated. I don’t work in the yard these days, but if for some reason I have to be outside for a while, it would be nice to be able to carry one of them outside with me. The unit also has to be able to pick up his voice from several feet if necessary. Or find a way to keep one in his bathroom.

Hello Sheron, thank you for your comment! I think, something like the Echo Show would be perfect for your situation if you have WiFi around your home. Glad you found the article helpful!
